Coupe de la Ligue
The Coupe de la Ligue, often known as the French League Cup, was a prestigious knockout football competition in France organized by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP). Established in 1994, it served as a secondary cup tournament alongside the more historic Coupe de France. The competition's roots trace back to earlier, intermittent tournaments like the Coupe Charles Drago (1953-1965) and a brief Coupe de la Ligue in the 1960s, but the modern iteration provided consistent annual drama from the mid-1990s onward. The format was a straightforward single-elimination knockout tournament, typically involving all professional clubs from Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, totaling 44 teams. Matches were played over a single leg, with extra time and penalties deciding drawn affairs. The winner earned a coveted place in European competition, specifically the UEFA Europa League (or previously the UEFA Cup), provided they had not already qualified through league position. The competition was dominated by France's elite clubs. Paris Saint-Germain is the most successful club in its history, winning the trophy a record nine times, including an unprecedented streak of six consecutive titles from 2014 to 2020. Other frequent winners include Olympique de Marseille, Olympique Lyonnais, AS Monaco, and Girondins de Bordeaux. The final was traditionally held at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, offering a major showpiece event. Numerous world-class graced the tournament, including Zlatan Ibrahimović, Neymar Jr., Kylian Mbappé, and Edinson Cavani for PSG, as well as legends like Juninho Pernambucano for Lyon and Didier Drogba for Marseille. The cup provided a platform for memorable moments, such as Guingamp's surprise victory in 2009 and Strasbourg's win in 2005. An interesting fact is that the competition was suspended after the 2019-20 season due to a lack of broadcasting revenue and a crowded calendar, with the LFP voting to discontinue it indefinitely. Its absence has left a gap in the French football season, consolidating the Coupe de France's status as the sole national cup competition. The unique trophy, featuring a stylized football, remains a symbol of a distinct era in French football.
