Ligue 2, historically known as Division 2, is the second-highest division in the French football league system, sitting directly below Ligue 1. Founded in 1933, it has served as a crucial proving ground for clubs and a vital pathway for talent development throughout French football history. The league's structure has evolved over the decades, but its core mission of competitive football and promotion to the top flight remains unchanged. The competition features 20 professional clubs each season. The format is a classic double round-robin, where each team plays the other 19 twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 38 matches per club. The season typically runs from August to May. At its conclusion, the top two teams are automatically promoted to Ligue 1. The third-place finisher enters a high-stakes promotion playoff, facing the 18th-placed team from Ligue 1 in a two-legged tie for the final spot in the top division. Conversely, the bottom two teams are relegated to the Championnat National (third tier), while the 18th-placed team enters a relegation playoff against the third-place finisher from the National. Ligue 2 is home to a mix of historic clubs with top-flight pedigree and ambitious sides seeking their breakthrough. Notable participants often include former Ligue 1 champions like AS Saint-Étienne, FC Metz, and AJ Auxerre, as well as clubs with strong regional followings such as Paris FC, EA Guingamp, and SM Caen. The league has been a launchpad for numerous world-class players early in their careers. Icons like Kylian Mbappé (who debuted for Monaco's first team while they were in Ligue 2), Laurent Blanc, Didier Drogba, and more recently, players like Aurélien Tchouaméni and Christopher Nkunku, all graced the division before becoming global stars. The current competitive landscape is intensely balanced, often described as a "marathon" where consistency is key. Financial disparities are less pronounced than in Ligue 1, leading to unpredictable outcomes and thrilling promotion battles. An interesting fact is that the league's all-time top scorer is the legendary Argentine striker Delio Onnis, who netted 148 goals in the division during the 1970s and 80s. Furthermore, Ligue 2 has a reputation for tactical innovation and robust physical play, making it a uniquely challenging and respected competition in European football.
