Newcastle Jets
Founded in 2000 as a direct successor to the Newcastle Breakers, the Newcastle Jets Football Club emerged as a cornerstone of the newly formed A-League, representing the passionate football heartland of the Hunter region in New South Wales. The club’s identity is deeply intertwined with the industrial and working-class spirit of Newcastle, a city with a rich footballing tradition predating the national league. The Jets play their home matches at the iconic McDonald Jones Stadium, a 33,000-seat venue that has hosted numerous memorable nights. The club’s greatest achievement came in the 2007-08 A-League season, when they captured the Championship title in a stunning Grand Final victory over the Central Coast Mariners, sealed by a dramatic late goal from Mark Bridge. They have also been Grand Finalists on two other occasions (2008-09, 2017-18). The club’s playing style has historically leaned towards an attacking, direct approach, often reflecting the gritty determination of its community. Legendary figures who have worn the red and blue include creative maestro Nicky Carle, prolific striker Joel Griffiths, and fan-favorite goalkeeper Mark Birighitti. More recently, Socceroos star Adam Taggart won the A-League Golden Boot as a Jet. The club’s supporter base, anchored by the vocal "Squadron" active supporter group, is renowned for its loyalty and creates a formidable atmosphere at McDonald Jones. A fierce rivalry exists with the Western Sydney Wanderers, often dubbed the "Battle of the West," fueled by geographical proximity and competitive matches. Currently, the Jets compete in the A-League Men, consistently striving to recapture past glories and establish themselves as a finals contender. An interesting fact is that the club scored the very first goal in A-League history, netted by Ante Milicic in the 2005 inaugural match. Beyond the pitch, the Jets are a vital community institution, running extensive programs to grow the sport throughout the Hunter region.
