Team profile
Nancy
Founded in 1967 through the merger of two local clubs, AS Nancy and FC Nancy, Association Sportive de Nancy-Lorraine, commonly known as AS Nancy or simply Nancy, is a historic French football club based in the city of Nancy in the Grand Est region. The club was established with the ambition of creating a strong sporting entity for the Lorraine region. Their home is the Stade Marcel Picot, a 20,000-capacity stadium in Tomblaine, just outside Nancy, known for its intimate and often fervent atmosphere. Nancy's most glorious period came in the late 1970s under the presidency of Claude Cuenot and the management of Antoine Redin. The pinnacle was winning the 1978 Coupe de France, defeating Nice 1-0 in the final, a triumph that remains the club's only major trophy. This victory also secured their first foray into European competition, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. The club is famously renowned for its exceptional youth academy, which has produced a stream of French internationals. The most legendary figure to emerge is Michel Platini, who began his professional career at Nancy in 1972, dazzling fans with his technique and vision before moving to Saint-Étienne and Juventus. Other notable academy products include Olivier Rouyer, Tony Vairelles, and more recently, Youssouf Hadji. The club's identity is built on a tradition of developing young, technical players and playing attractive football. Their passionate supporters, known as the "Grenats" (the Garnets, for their traditional shirt color), gather in the Kop Marcel Picot to create a vibrant atmosphere. Nancy shares intense regional rivalries, most notably with FC Metz in the "Derby de Lorraine" and with RC Strasbourg. After decades oscillating between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, Nancy experienced a significant decline, suffering relegation to the Championnat National (third tier) in 2022. As of the 2023-24 season, they are competing in Ligue 2, aiming to rebuild and return to the top flight. An interesting fact is that the club's emblem features the Cross of Lorraine, a symbol of the region's identity and resilience. Despite current challenges, Nancy's legacy as a cradle of French football talent and their historic cup win ensure their place in the nation's footballing narrative.
