Yokohama F. Marinos, one of Japan's most storied football clubs, was founded in 1972 as the company team of Nissan Motors. Originally known as Nissan Motors FC, the club was a founding member of the Japan Soccer League and became a powerhouse in the 1980s and early 1990s. A pivotal moment came in 1999 when the club merged with the city's other top team, Yokohama Flügels, adopting the name "F. Marinos" (with the "F" honoring the Flügels) and solidifying its identity as the flagship club of Yokohama.
