Founded in 1945 in the immediate aftermath of World War II, Lechia Gdańsk emerged as a symbol of Polish identity and resilience in the newly recovered port city. The club's early decades were spent navigating the lower tiers of Polish football, but a golden era dawned in the 1980s. This period saw Lechia achieve its greatest triumph: winning the Polish Cup in 1983, defeating Piast Gliwice in the final. This victory secured the club's first and only major national trophy and a historic foray into European competition, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, where they famously faced Juventus. The team's home is the modern, 41,620-capacity Stadion Energa Gdańsk, a venue built for UEFA Euro 2012. Its distinctive amber-colored exterior pays homage to the region's famous Baltic amber trade. The stadium replaced the beloved, atmospheric old Biało-Zieloni ground, providing a world-class facility that has hosted national team matches and European qualifiers. Lechia's identity is deeply intertwined with its passionate fanbase, known as the "Young Lions." The supporters, clad in the club's green and white colors, create a formidable atmosphere, particularly in the dedicated "Kocioł" (The Cauldron) section. The club's most intense rivalry is the "Trójmiasto Derby" against Arka Gdynia, a fierce contest that divides the Tri-City metropolitan area. On the pitch, Lechia has often been characterized by a gritty, resilient, and defensively organized style, reflecting the hard-working ethos of the port city. Legendary figures include the 1983 cup-winning heroes, as well as modern icons like the prolific striker Grzegorz Rasiak and long-serving captain Łukasz Surma. In recent years, Lechia has established itself as a stable Ekstraklasa side, achieving notable success by winning the Polish Cup again in 2019 and securing European qualification. The club is municipally owned, with the city of Gdańsk holding a majority stake, ensuring its deep roots in the local community. Lechia Gdańsk remains a proud institution, embodying the spirit of its city with a history of underdog triumphs and a fiercely loyal following.
