The UEFA Nations League is a biennial international football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the member associations of UEFA. Launched in 2018, it was conceived to replace meaningless friendly matches with competitive fixtures, providing more meaningful games for all 55 UEFA nations and a clearer pathway to major tournament qualification. The competition's innovative format divides teams into four leagues (A, B, C, and D) based on their UEFA ranking, with promotion and relegation between them. Each league is further divided into groups, where teams play home-and-away round-robin matches. The winners of the four groups in League A advance to a knockout Final Four tournament to determine the champion. Crucially, the Nations League is linked to qualification for the UEFA European Championship, offering a secondary route to the finals via playoffs for teams that do not qualify through the main qualifying campaign. The top tier, League A, features Europe's elite national teams such as France, Spain, Germany, Italy, England, Portugal, and the Netherlands. The competition has quickly become a significant stage for the world's most famous players, including Kylian Mbappé, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin De Bruyne, and Harry Kane, who compete for national glory outside of the traditional major tournaments. The current competitive landscape sees the Nations League as a respected trophy, with Portugal winning the inaugural edition in 2019 and France claiming the 2021 title. Spain won the 2023 edition. An interesting fact is that the competition's structure allows smaller footballing nations to compete against peers of similar strength, fostering development and offering a realistic chance of silverware and promotion. The Final Four host is selected from the qualified teams, adding a mini-tournament atmosphere to the climax of the competition.
