Founded in 1909 by a group of young men from Curitiba's high society, Coritiba Foot Ball Club is the oldest football club in the Brazilian state of Paraná. Its establishment was inspired by the English sport, with the club's name and early identity reflecting a strong British influence. Known as "Coxa" (a nickname derived from a historical mispronunciation of "Coritiba") and "O Glorioso" (The Glorious), the club is a cornerstone of southern Brazilian football. The team's home is the Estádio Couto Pereira, a historic venue in Curitiba with a capacity of over 40,000. Coritiba's greatest achievement on the national stage is winning the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in 1985, a landmark title for the club and the state of Paraná. They have also been runners-up in the Série A on two other occasions and have lifted the Copa do Brasil trophy once, in 2011. Domestically, they are a powerhouse, holding the record for the most Campeonato Paranaense titles, with over 38 state championships. The club's identity is built on a tradition of technical, attacking football, often producing and showcasing talented playmakers. Legendary figures include the iconic midfielder Alex, who began his career at Coritiba before starring for Fenerbahçe and the Brazilian national team, and the versatile defender Rafinha, who later played for Bayern Munich. The passionate fan base, known as "Coxa-Branca," is famous for its unwavering support and creates a formidable atmosphere at Couto Pereira. Coritiba's most intense rivalry is the "Atletiba," against Atlético Paranaense, one of the most heated derbies in Brazilian football. An interesting historical fact is that Coritiba was a pioneer, being one of the first clubs in Brazil to install floodlights for night games in the 1930s. Currently, the club competes in the Série B, Brazil's second division, after being relegated in 2023, and is focused on a swift return to the top flight.
