Torreense, officially known as Sport Clube União Torreense, is a historic Portuguese football club based in the charming town of Torres Vedras, located about 50 kilometres north of Lisbon. Founded on 19 September 1917, the club emerged from a merger of local sporting groups, quickly becoming the sporting heart of the region. The club’s colours of yellow and black have earned them the nickname “Canarinhos” (little canaries), and their home matches are played at the Estádio Manuel Marques, a venue with a capacity of around 12,000 that has witnessed many memorable moments. Torreense’s golden era arrived in the 1970s, when they achieved the unthinkable: winning the Taça de Portugal in the 1974–75 season. As a second-division side, they stunned Portuguese football by defeating top-flight giants Benfica 2–1 in the final at Estádio Nacional. This remains one of the greatest cup upsets in Portuguese history and the club’s crowning achievement. They also reached the final of the Taça de Portugal again in 1977–78, losing to Benfica. In European competition, Torreense participated in the 1975–76 European Cup Winners’ Cup, where they faced Grazer AK of Austria, narrowly losing on aggregate. The club spent several seasons in the Primeira Liga during the 1970s and 1980s, with their best top-flight finish being 4th place in 1975–76. Notable players who wore the yellow shirt include midfielder Fernando Chalana, a legendary Portuguese international who began his career at Torreense before moving to Benfica, and striker Octávio Machado, who was a key figure in the cup-winning side. Other homegrown talents like Vítor Paneira and current Portugal international João Palhinha also started their youth careers at the club. Torreense have traditionally been known for a resilient, team-oriented playing style, often punching above their weight against more famous opponents. The fan culture is deeply rooted in the local community. The Torrões, the club’s most passionate supporters, create an electric atmosphere at the Estádio Manuel Marques, particularly during local derbies against Caldas SC—a rivalry known as the “Dérbi do Oeste” (Western Derby). Another long-standing rivalry exists with União de Leiria, reflecting regional pride in the Lisbon outskirts. Currently, Torreense compete in Liga Portugal 2, the second tier of Portuguese football, after gaining promotion from the third division in 2022. They have established themselves as a stable second-tier side, aiming for a return to the elite. An interesting fact: Torreense is the only club outside the traditional “Big Three” (Benfica, Porto, Sporting) to have won the Taça de Portugal while not playing in the top flight, a feat that still resonates with neutrals as a symbol of the underdog spirit. Their academy continues to develop promising talent, ensuring the club remains a vital part of Portugal’s football landscape.
