Athletic Club appoints Edin Terzic as new head coach, signing a contract until 2028. The former Borussia Dortmund manager, who led his team to the 2024 Champions League final, takes over from Ernesto Valverde.

Edin Terzic will become the next head coach of Athletic Club, the Basque club officially confirmed at midday on Sunday. The 41-year-old German tactician, born in Menden on October 30, 1982, has signed a contract that runs through 2028, taking the reins at San Mamés for the next two campaigns. He replaces Ernesto Valverde, who departs after four seasons in charge.

Terzic arrives with a strong pedigree after guiding Borussia Dortmund to the 2024 UEFA Champions League final, where they fell to Real Madrid. His appointment marks a significant departure from recent Athletic tradition, as he has no previous ties to the club or even to LaLiga. Club president Jon Uriarte opted for a coach without any connection to the red-and-white family, a clear break from the past.

The decision comes as Athletic look to reverse a downturn in form that has seen results slip in recent months. After Valverde's solid but inconsistent tenure, Uriarte has chosen a fresh face to steer the ship. Terzic's reputation for developing young talent and his high-energy style are expected to align with Athletic's philosophy of relying on homegrown players, despite his lack of familiarity with the league.

Terzic's coaching career includes assistant roles at Dortmund and West Ham, as well as a stint as interim boss at BVB in 2021 before taking the job permanently. His ability to handle pressure and his tactical acumen were on full display during Dortmund's European run. Now he faces the unique challenge of managing a club restricted to Basque players.

The Athletic hierarchy views Terzic as the right man to stabilize the squad and push for European qualification. The contract until 2028 signals long-term commitment, though the initial focus will be on immediate results. Fans will be eager to see how the German adapts to a completely new environment.

With the official announcement, the mystery surrounding the coaching succession has been resolved. Terzic's first task will be to assess the current roster and implement his ideas during preseason. The club hopes his fresh perspective can reignite a team that has lost its way.
