Founded in 1875 by Irish immigrants in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh, Hibernian Football Club—affectionately known as "Hibs"—is one of Scotland's oldest and most storied clubs. Established to provide recreation for the city's Irish Catholic community, the club's name and green-and-white colours proudly reflect its Hibernian (Irish) roots. Their home is the iconic Easter Road stadium in the Leith district, a ground renowned for its intimate and atmospheric setting, which has been their base since 1893. Hibs' history is punctuated by moments of brilliance and heartbreak. They were the first club from the east of Scotland to win a major trophy, lifting the Scottish Cup in 1902. Their most legendary era was the post-war period, featuring the "Famous Five" forward line of Gordon Smith, Bobby Johnstone, Lawrie Reilly, Eddie Turnbull, and Willie Ormond, which helped secure three league titles in 1948, 1951, and 1952. The club also made history as the first British team to participate in European competition, playing in the inaugural Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1955. After a long drought, they famously won the Scottish Cup in 2016, ending a 114-year wait for the trophy. The club's identity is built on a tradition of attractive, attacking football. Legendary players like Reilly, Turnbull, and more recently, Pat Stanton and Franck Sauzée, are revered. The fan culture is deeply passionate, with supporters known for their unwavering loyalty and the iconic anthem "Sunshine on Leith," which echoes through Easter Road after victories. Currently competing in the Scottish Premiership, Hibs maintain a fierce rivalry with city neighbours Heart of Midlothian (Hearts), with the Edinburgh Derby being one of the most intense in Scottish football. An interesting fact is that the club's motto, "They Shall Not Pass," was adopted from the Battle of the Ebro during the Spanish Civil War, reflecting the anti-fascist sympathies of some of its early supporters. Hibernian remains a cornerstone of Scottish football, blending a rich heritage with a modern, community-focused outlook.
