Team profile
New York Red Bulls
Founded in 1995 as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, the club was a charter member of Major League Soccer. The early years were marked by a search for identity, with the team playing at Giants Stadium and undergoing numerous coaching changes. A transformative moment came in 2006 when the Austrian energy drink giant Red Bull GmbH purchased the franchise, rebranding it as the New York Red Bulls and instilling a new corporate philosophy and vision. The club's home is the purpose-built Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, a 25,000-seat soccer-specific stadium renowned for its intimate atmosphere and iconic roof. It stands as one of the premier soccer venues in the United States. While the team's name references New York, its roots are firmly planted in the New Jersey side of the metropolitan area. In terms of achievements, the Red Bulls have claimed the MLS Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record, three times (2013, 2015, 2018). Despite this consistent regular-season success, the MLS Cup has remained elusive, with the team often falling short in the playoffs. They have also been a participant in the CONCACAF Champions League. The club has been home to global football legends, most notably French superstar Thierry Henry, who served as captain and became the face of the franchise from 2010 to 2014. Other iconic figures include the club's all-time leading scorer, Bradley Wright-Phillips, and fan-favorite goalkeeper Luis Robles. The playing style has evolved over the years, but under the Red Bull global sporting model, it often emphasizes high pressing, energetic play, and developing young talent through a strong academy system. The supporter culture is vibrant, anchored by the passionate South Ward supporters' group. A major rivalry exists with D.C. United, one of the oldest in MLS, and a more recent, intense local rivalry has developed with New York City FC, known as the Hudson River Derby. Currently, the Red Bulls remain a competitive force in the Eastern Conference, consistently challenging for playoff spots while integrating promising young players. An interesting fact is that the club's original name, MetroStars, was chosen through a fan vote, narrowly beating out "Empire." The rebranding to Red Bulls was initially met with resistance from some traditional fans but has since defined the club's modern era. The Red Bulls' academy has also become a prolific producer of talent for both the first team and the U.S. national team system.
