Unione Calcio Sampdoria, commonly known as Sampdoria, is a professional football club based in the historic port city of Genoa, Italy. Founded on August 12, 1946, through the merger of two local clubs, Sampierdarenese and Andrea Doria, the new entity adopted a name blending the two predecessors and a crest featuring a sailor, symbolizing the city's maritime heritage. The club's iconic blue shirts with white, red, and black horizontal bands earned them the nickname "blucerchiati" (blue-circled). The team plays its home matches at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, a ground they share with fierce city rivals Genoa C.F.C. The "Derby della Lanterna" is one of Italy's most passionate and historic derbies, named after the lighthouse of Genoa. Sampdoria's identity is built on a blend of gritty determination and stylish play, often associated with attacking football. Sampdoria's golden era arrived in the late 1980s and early 1990s under the visionary presidency of Paolo Mantovani and the management of Vujadin Boškov. This period saw the club win its only Serie A title in the 1990-91 season, a historic Scudetto. They also claimed the Coppa Italia four times (1985, 1988, 1989, 1994) and reached the pinnacle of European football, finishing as runners-up in the 1992 European Cup (now Champions League) after a narrow final loss to Barcelona at Wembley. They also won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1990. Legendary players from this era define the club's history, including the prolific strike partnership of Roberto Mancini and Gianluca Vialli, midfield maestro Attilio Lombardo, and defender Pietro Vierchowod. The club's fan culture is deeply rooted in the working-class neighborhoods of Genoa, known for their passionate and loyal support through both triumphs and tribulations. In recent years, Sampdoria has experienced financial turbulence and fluctuating fortunes. After several seasons in Serie A, the club was relegated to Serie B at the end of the 2022-23 season. Currently competing in Italy's second tier, Sampdoria is working towards a return to the top flight, carrying the legacy of its glorious past and the unwavering support of its fans. An interesting fact is that the club's crest is one of the most unique in world football, featuring a black silhouette of a sailor smoking a pipe, a direct nod to the Genoese "baciccia."
