PFC Beroe Stara Zagora is a historic Bulgarian football club, founded in 1916 in the city of Stara Zagora. The club's name is derived from the ancient Thracian name for the city, "Beroe," symbolizing deep local roots and pride. Its early years were marked by regional competition, but Beroe steadily grew to become a significant force in Bulgarian football. The team plays its home matches at the Beroe Stadium, a modern arena with a capacity of approximately 12,128 spectators, located in the heart of Stara Zagora. The city, known for its rich history and the ancient Roman forum, provides a passionate backdrop for the club's activities. Beroe's most glorious period came in the mid-1980s. The pinnacle of their achievements was winning the Bulgarian A PFG title in the 1985-86 season, a monumental triumph that remains the club's crowning glory. They have also been Bulgarian Cup winners on two occasions (2010, 2013) and have participated in European competitions, including the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Europa League, where they have often been noted for spirited performances against more established sides. The club has been a springboard for legendary Bulgarian players. Most notably, the iconic Hristo Stoichkov, widely regarded as the greatest Bulgarian footballer of all time, began his professional career at Beroe in 1982 before moving to CSKA Sofia and later Barcelona. Other legends include Petko Petkov, the club's all-time top scorer, and goalkeeper Zdravko Zdravkov. Beroe's identity is built on a foundation of resilience and technical, attacking football, reflecting the character of its supporters. The fan base, known for its loyalty and vibrant atmosphere, includes the organized "Beroe Ultras" group, who create a formidable presence at the Beroe Stadium. A fierce regional rivalry exists with Lokomotiv Plovdiv, known as the "Thracian Derby," which is one of the most heated contests in Bulgarian football. Currently, Beroe competes in the Bulgarian First Professional Football League, consistently aiming to secure a stable position in the top half of the table and challenge for European qualification spots. An interesting fact is that the club's emblem features a lion, a symbol of strength and courage, which is also a common heraldic symbol in the Stara Zagora region. The club continues to honor its century-long legacy while striving for future success.
