Founded in 1924 through the merger of two local clubs, International and América, Atlético Paranaense—commonly known as Athletico Paranaense or simply "Furacão" (The Hurricane)—is a cornerstone of football in southern Brazil. Based in Curitiba, the capital of Paraná state, the club has cultivated a reputation for innovation, resilience, and a fiercely independent identity. The team's home is the iconic Arena da Baixada, a modern, intimate stadium with a capacity of around 42,000. Notably, it was one of the first stadiums in Brazil to feature a retractable roof and is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and fan proximity to the pitch. This venue has been central to the club's success, creating a formidable fortress for visiting teams. Athletico's trophy cabinet, while not the largest in Brazil, is marked by significant achievements. The pinnacle was winning the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in 2001, a landmark title for a club from outside the traditional Rio-São Paulo axis. They have also claimed the Copa do Brasil in 2019 and, most impressively, reached the final of the Copa Libertadores in 2005 and 2022, finishing as runners-up on both occasions. Domestically, they are consistent contenders in the Série A and have won the Campeonato Paranaense state championship over 25 times. The club's identity is built on a foundation of strong youth development and tactical discipline. Legendary players who have worn the red-and-black stripes include the creative midfielder Alex, the formidable goalkeeper Flávio, and more recently, stars like Fernandinho and Pablo. The playing style often emphasizes a solid defensive structure combined with swift, direct counter-attacks, embodying the relentless energy of their "Hurricane" moniker. The fan base, known as "Furacão," is passionate and loyal, with a fierce rivalry against Coritiba, the other major club in Curitiba, in the "Atletiba" derby—one of Brazil's most intense. An interesting fact is the club's innovative management model, which has been studied internationally for its financial sustainability and strategic planning. Currently, Athletico Paranaense remains a consistent force in the Série A, regularly qualifying for continental competitions like the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, which they won in 2018 and 2021. They are widely respected as a model of modern, well-run football in Brazil, constantly challenging the established powers.
