Founded in 1936 in the historic city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second-largest city, Lokomotiv Plovdiv is a club with a deep-rooted identity tied to the railway workers who established it. Initially known as "Slavia," the club adopted its current name in 1945, reflecting its connection to the national railway company. This origin story is central to the club's ethos, representing the working-class spirit and resilience of its supporters. The team's home is the Lokomotiv Stadium, a venue with a capacity of around 13,000 that has witnessed decades of football history. Plovdiv itself, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, provides a vibrant backdrop for the club's activities. Lokomotiv's most glorious period came in the early 2000s, when they achieved a historic domestic double. They won the Bulgarian A PFG league title in the 2003-04 season, a monumental achievement, and secured the Bulgarian Cup in 2004 and again in 2019, the latter ending a 15-year trophy drought. The club's European adventures, though often brief, include memorable campaigns in the UEFA Cup and Europa League, where they have faced renowned opponents. Legendary figures who have donned the red-and-black jersey include iconic striker Georgi Ivanov, midfield maestro Hristo Koilov, and more recently, influential captain Dimitar Iliev. The team is traditionally known for its passionate, attacking style of play, embodying a never-say-die attitude that resonates with its fanbase. The supporters, known as "The Lauta Faithful," are among the most fervent in Bulgaria, creating an intense atmosphere at their home ground. Their primary and most heated rivalry is the "Plovdiv Derby" against city foes Botev Plovdiv, one of the oldest and most fiercely contested derbies in Bulgarian football. Currently competing in the Bulgarian First Professional Football League, Lokomotiv Plovdiv continues to be a competitive force, often challenging for European qualification spots. An interesting fact is the club's nickname, "The Smurfs," derived from their distinctive blue away kits in the past, a moniker that has stuck affectionately with the fans.
