Founded in 1927 by workers of the Cemento Cruz Azul company in the small town of Jasso, Hidalgo, Cruz Azul is one of Mexico's most storied and passionately supported football clubs. The team's identity is deeply rooted in its working-class origins, a spirit that continues to define its character. Originally known as Club Deportivo Cruz Azul, the club moved to Mexico City in 1971, establishing its home at the iconic Estadio Azteca, a venue it shares with rivals Club América. This colossal stadium, with a capacity exceeding 87,000, has been the stage for many of the club's greatest triumphs and most heartbreaking defeats. Cruz Azul's history is decorated with significant silverware. Domestically, they have claimed nine Liga MX titles, with their most dominant era occurring in the 1970s, where they won four championships. Their trophy cabinet also includes four Copa MX titles and multiple Campeón de Campeones cups. Internationally, "La Máquina" (The Machine) has left an indelible mark, winning the CONCACAF Champions League a record six times, a testament to their historical strength in the region. They also reached the final of the Copa Libertadores in 2001, the best finish by a Mexican club in the prestigious South American tournament. The club's identity is built on a traditionally disciplined, tactical, and defensively solid style of play, though recent years have seen a shift towards a more attacking philosophy. Legendary players who have worn the celestial blue jersey include Carlos Hermosillo, the club's all-time top scorer; the elegant midfielder Gerardo Torrado; and the iconic goalkeeper "Conejo" Pérez. The fanbase, known for its unwavering loyalty, is famous for the "Celestial" chant that echoes through the Azteca. Currently, Cruz Azul remains a consistent contender in Liga MX, breaking a long-standing "curse" by winning the 2021 Guardianes championship after a 23-year drought. Their most intense rivalry is the "Clásico Joven" against Club América, a fierce battle for capital city supremacy. Another notable rivalry is with Pumas UNAM. An interesting fact is that the club's name and colors directly derive from the cement company, making it one of the few major clubs in the world with such a direct corporate origin story.
