Espanyol
Founded in 1900 by Ángel Rodríguez, a young engineering student, RCD Espanyol is one of the oldest and most storied clubs in Spanish football. Its very name, meaning "Spanish," was a deliberate statement of national identity in Catalonia, creating a foundational contrast with its more famous city rival. The club's early years were marked by a pioneering spirit, helping to establish football in the region before the professional era. The club's home is the RCDE Stadium, a modern 40,000-capacity arena in Cornellà-El Prat, inaugurated in 2009. This move from the iconic, atmospheric Sarrià Stadium marked a new chapter. Espanyol's identity is deeply woven into the fabric of Barcelona, representing a proud, working-class alternative within the city's sporting landscape. In terms of achievements, Espanyol has a proud history, though often in the shadow of its neighbors. The club has won the Copa del Rey four times (1929, 1940, 2000, 2006), with the 2006 victory being particularly memorable. On the European stage, they reached the UEFA Cup final in 1988 and again in 2007, narrowly losing on penalties to Sevilla in the latter. They have never won La Liga, but have been a consistent presence in the top flight for most of their history. Legendary figures include the iconic goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora, who began his career there, and club all-time top scorer Raúl Tamudo, a symbol of loyalty and grit. More recent heroes include Iván de la Peña and the prolific striker Raúl de Tomás. The team's playing style has traditionally emphasized technical skill and fighting spirit, embodying the *periquito* (parakeet) nickname of their fans. The fan culture is passionate and deeply rooted, with a fierce sense of identity. The most significant rivalry is the *Derbi Barceloní* against FC Barcelona, a clash of city pride and sporting philosophy. An interesting fact is that Espanyol is one of the few major clubs in Europe to be owned by a Chinese consortium, Rastar Group, since 2016. Currently, the club competes in La Liga, striving to maintain its top-flight status and build a sustainable future while honoring its rich, resilient history.
