Sturm Graz
Founded in 1909 in the Styrian capital of Graz, Sportklub Sturm Graz is one of Austria's most storied and passionate football clubs. The club's name, meaning "Storm," perfectly captures the fierce, attacking identity it has cultivated over more than a century. Sturm's early decades were spent in regional leagues, but the post-war era saw them establish themselves as a permanent fixture in the Austrian top flight. The club's home is the modern Merkur Arena, a 15,323-capacity stadium that replaced the legendary Arnold-Schwarzenegger-Stadion in 1997. This venue, located in the Liebenau district, has been the fortress for Sturm's most glorious chapters. The club's golden era arrived in the late 1990s and early 2000s under the visionary management of Ivica Osim. This period yielded the club's most significant achievements: three Austrian Bundesliga titles (1998, 1999, 2011) and three Austrian Cups (1996, 1997, 1999). Sturm also made a memorable run to the UEFA Champions League group stage in the 2000-01 season, famously defeating Feyenoord and holding Rangers to a draw. Legendary players are woven into the club's fabric. The elegant Ivica Osim, later a revered manager, was a key player in the 1970s. The modern era was defined by icons like striker Mario Haas, a local hero and all-time top scorer, and the brilliant playmaker Markus Schopp. The club's identity is built on a passionate, attacking style of football, often emphasizing youth development and a never-say-die attitude that resonates deeply with its supporters. The fan culture is vibrant and deeply rooted, with the "Sturm Ultras" creating an intense atmosphere at the Merkur Arena. The club's primary and most heated rivalry is with fellow Styrian club Grazer AK, a feud known as the "Styrian Derby" that divides the city. After a period of rebuilding, Sturm Graz has re-emerged as a major force, consistently challenging for the title and securing European football, reaffirming its status as a cornerstone of Austrian football.
