Team profile
Twente
Founded in 1965 through the merger of Sportclub Enschede and Enschedese Boys, FC Twente is a professional football club from the city of Enschede in the eastern Netherlands. The club's name derives from the Twente region, and its identity is deeply rooted in the local "Tukker" working-class ethos, characterized by resilience and a no-nonsense attitude. The club's journey from a regional force to a national champion is a story of perseverance. The team plays its home matches at De Grolsch Veste, a modern 30,205-capacity stadium in Enschede, known for its vibrant atmosphere. Twente's most glorious period came in the late 2000s and early 2010s under manager Steve McClaren. The pinnacle was the 2009-10 season, when they sensationally won their first and only Eredivisie title, breaking the dominance of the traditional "Big Three." This triumph was followed by a KNVB Cup win in 2011 and consistent participation in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, including a memorable run to the UEFA Cup final in 1975. Legendary players who have donned the red-and-white jersey include Dutch internationals Blaise Nkufo, Theo Janssen, and Bryan Ruiz, as well as Swedish star Kennedy Bakircioglu. The club is known for its passionate and loyal fanbase, the "Tukkers," who create an intimidating atmosphere at De Grolsch Veste. Their fierce rivalry with nearby club Heracles Almelo is known as the "Twentse Derby." After financial difficulties led to relegation in 2018, Twente has successfully rebuilt, earning promotion back to the Eredivisie and re-establishing itself as a stable top-flight club. They consistently compete for European qualification spots, embodying the fighting spirit of their region. An interesting fact is that the club's crest features a stylized tower, representing the "Torentje van Drienerlo," a landmark on the campus of the University of Twente.
