Amiens
Founded in 1901 as Amiens Athlétic Club, Amiens Sporting Club is a historic football institution from the Picardy region of northern France. The club's early decades were spent in the regional leagues before adopting its current name in 1961. A significant milestone came in 1999 with the inauguration of the Stade de la Licorne (Unicorn Stadium), a modern 12,095-capacity arena that replaced the old Stade Moulonguet and became a symbol of the club's ambitions. Amiens' history is defined by perseverance rather than a trophy cabinet filled with silverware. Their greatest achievement arrived in 2017 when, under coach Christophe Pélissier, they secured a miraculous promotion to Ligue 1 for the first time in the club's history, finishing second in Ligue 2. This fairytale continued in their debut top-flight season (2017-18), where they defied expectations to avoid relegation. The club also reached the Coupe de France final in 2001, losing narrowly to Strasbourg. The identity of "Les Licornes" (The Unicorns) is built on a gritty, defensive resilience and a strong team spirit, often reflecting the industrial character of their city. The fanbase, while not the largest, is fiercely loyal and passionate, with the "Unicorn Kop" creating an intense atmosphere at the Licorne. A notable rivalry exists with RC Lens, forming the "Derby du Nord," a clash fueled by geographical proximity and regional pride. Legendary figures include Emmanuel Bourgaud, a one-club man and record appearance holder, and more recently, Tanguy Ndombele, who used Amiens as a springboard to a career at Tottenham and Lyon. Currently, Amiens competes in Ligue 2, consistently challenging for promotion and maintaining its status as a respected and resilient club in French football's second tier.
