Founded in 1918 in the Black Sea port city of Varna, PFC Spartak Varna is one of Bulgaria's oldest and most storied football clubs. Its origins trace back to the merger of two local sports clubs, "Shipka" and "Levski," with the new name chosen in solidarity with the Spartacist movement and the ideals of the Russian Revolution. This revolutionary spirit has been a cornerstone of the club's identity ever since. The team plays its home matches at the Stadion Spartak, a historic venue with a capacity of around 10,000 spectators. While not the largest in the country, it is known for its intense atmosphere, particularly during matches against local rivals. Spartak's golden era was undoubtedly the 1930s, when they claimed three consecutive Bulgarian Championship titles (1932, 1933, 1934), establishing themselves as a pre-war powerhouse. They also won the Bulgarian Cup in 1983 and have made several appearances in European competitions, including the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. The club's playing style has traditionally been associated with attacking, passionate football, reflecting the fiery character of its supporters. Legendary figures who have worn the red-and-white jersey include Georgi Bonev, one of Bulgaria's all-time greats, and the formidable defender Kiril Rakarov. More recently, players like the prolific striker Georgi Ivanov have kept the club's competitive spirit alive. Spartak's fan base, known as the "Spartak Fans," is among the most dedicated in Bulgaria, creating a formidable atmosphere at home and traveling in numbers for away matches. Their primary and most intense rivalry is with city neighbors Cherno More Varna, with the Varna derby being one of the most fiercely contested fixtures in Bulgarian football. After periods of fluctuation between divisions, Spartak Varna currently competes in the Bulgarian First Professional Football League, the top tier of Bulgarian football, where they continue to fight for stability and a return to former glories. An interesting fact is that the club's emblem features a prominent "S" intertwined with a star, a symbol that has remained largely unchanged for decades, representing a deep connection to its revolutionary roots and enduring legacy.
