Team profile
Troyes
Founded in 1986 through the merger of two local clubs, Association Troyes Aube Champagne (ATAC) and Troyes AF, Espérance Sportive Troyes Aube Champagne, commonly known as ESTAC Troyes, is a professional football club based in the historic city of Troyes, in the Champagne region of France. The club's identity is deeply intertwined with its city, known for its medieval architecture and textile industry, with the team's nickname, "ESTAC," reflecting its local roots. The team plays its home matches at the Stade de l'Aube, a modest but atmospheric 20,400-seat stadium that has been its fortress since 1976. While not among France's most decorated clubs, ESTAC has carved out a respectable history. Their most significant achievement came in the 2000-01 season when they won the UEFA Intertoto Cup, granting them a historic first foray into European competition. Domestically, they are multiple champions of Ligue 2, securing the title in 1999, 2017, and 2021, showcasing a pattern of resilience and promotion. The club has been a springboard for several notable players. Striker Bafétimbi Gomis began his professional career at Troyes, as did World Cup-winning midfielder Blaise Matuidi, who started in the youth academy before moving to Saint-Étienne. The club's playing style has often been pragmatic, focusing on solid organization and team spirit rather than lavish spending, a necessity given its position outside France's financial elite. ESTAC's fan culture is passionate and community-oriented, with supporters creating a vibrant atmosphere at the Stade de l'Aube. A key rivalry exists with nearby AJ Auxerre, a clash often referred to as the "Derby de l'Yonne," fueled by geographical proximity and competitive history. Currently, ESTAC competes in Ligue 2, following relegation from Ligue 1 at the end of the 2022-23 season. An interesting modern fact is its ownership by the City Football Group since 2020, linking the Champagne club to a global network that includes Manchester City. This partnership aims to bolster the club's infrastructure and long-term development, adding a new chapter to the story of this resilient provincial club.
