Gante
Founded in 1900 as the Association Athlétique Gantoise, the club now known as KAA Gent is a cornerstone of Belgian football, hailing from the historic city of Ghent in the Flanders region. The club's iconic nickname, "De Buffalo's," was adopted in the early 20th century after a visiting American Wild West show featuring buffaloes captivated the city, and the animal became a powerful symbol of the team's tenacious spirit. The Buffalo's play their home matches at the state-of-the-art Ghelamco Arena, a 20,000-capacity stadium opened in 2013 that replaced the historic Jules Ottenstadion. This modern fortress has been central to the club's recent rise. While Gent spent much of its history in the shadow of Belgian giants, their breakthrough came spectacularly in the 2014-15 season. Under coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck, they won their first-ever Belgian Pro League title, a triumph celebrated as a monumental achievement for the club. They have also won the Belgian Cup four times, with their most recent victory in 2022. Gent's playing style has often been characterized as attacking and progressive, a philosophy that has attracted talented players. Legendary figures include Belgian internationals like the creative midfielder Mbark Boussoufa and the prolific striker Mbo Mpenza. In recent years, the club has become known for its savvy recruitment, developing stars like Nigerian forward Gift Orban and Canadian international Jonathan David, who used Gent as a springboard to top European leagues. The fan culture is passionate and deeply rooted in the city's identity. The supporters, known for their vibrant displays and unwavering loyalty, foster a fierce rivalry with Club Brugge, a clash known as the "Battle of Flanders." Another significant rivalry exists with local neighbours KSC Lokeren. Currently, KAA Gent remains a consistent force in the Belgian Pro League, regularly competing for European qualification spots. An interesting fact is that the club's emblem features a buffalo, and a giant statue of one stands proudly outside the Ghelamco Arena. Their remarkable run to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 in 2015-16, where they faced Wolfsburg and Zenit St. Petersburg, remains a pinnacle of their European adventures, showcasing their ability to compete on the continental stage.
