Founded in 1902 in the Styrian capital of Graz, Grazer Athletiksport Klub, universally known as Grazer AK or simply GAK, is one of Austria's most storied and resilient football clubs. Established by workers from the local railway workshops, the club's early identity was forged in the industrial heart of the city. For much of its history, GAK lived in the shadow of its cross-city rival, SK Sturm Graz, but it carved out its own legacy through periods of remarkable success and dramatic perseverance. The club's home is the iconic Arnold-Schwarzenegger-Stadion, named after Graz's most famous son. This modern arena, with a capacity of over 16,000, has been the stage for GAK's greatest triumphs. The club's golden era arrived in the early 2000s under the presidency of the ambitious and controversial businessman, Hannes Kartnig. This period saw GAK transform into a major force, culminating in their historic Austrian Bundesliga title in the 2003-04 season. They also won the Austrian Cup three times (1981, 2000, 2002) and made memorable runs in European competition, including a UEFA Cup victory over Liverpool in 2004. Legendary players from this era include the prolific Croatian striker Mario Bazina, midfield general Dieter Ramusch, and the tenacious Austrian international Mario Standfest. The team was known for its aggressive, attacking style, often playing with high intensity and a direct approach that endeared them to their passionate supporters. The fan culture, centered in the "GAK-Fankurve," is fiercely loyal and defines itself in the intense rivalry with Sturm Graz—the "Styrian Derby" is one of Austrian football's most heated fixtures. However, GAK's story is also one of profound adversity. Financial mismanagement led to bankruptcy and relegation to the lower leagues in 2007. The club underwent a phoenix-like rise from the depths of amateur football, battling its way back through the divisions. Today, Grazer AK competes in the Austrian Second Division, consistently challenging for promotion and fueled by a dedicated fanbase that never lost faith. Their journey from bankruptcy to the brink of a top-flight return is a testament to the club's enduring spirit and its deep-rooted place in the community of Graz.
