Team profile
Hapoel Haifa
Founded in 1924, Hapoel Haifa is one of Israel's oldest and most storied football clubs, deeply woven into the fabric of the port city of Haifa. Established during the British Mandate period, the club was originally part of the Hapoel sports association, historically linked to the labor movement and kibbutzim, giving it a distinct socialist and working-class identity from its inception. The club's home is the iconic Sammy Ofer Stadium, a modern 30,942-capacity arena in Haifa which they share with city rivals Maccabi Haifa. This ground, opened in 2014, replaced the legendary Kiryat Eliezer Stadium, which had been their fortress for decades. Hapoel Haifa's history is punctuated by moments of triumph, most notably their three Israeli championships (1998-99, 2003-04, 2017-18) and four State Cup victories. Their 1998-99 league title was particularly historic, breaking a long-standing duopoly in Israeli football. The club has also ventured into European competition, with their most notable run coming in the 1999-2000 UEFA Champions League, where they famously defeated Besiktas before falling to Valencia. The identity of Hapoel Haifa is built on resilience, passion, and a never-say-die attitude. Their playing style has often reflected this, emphasizing grit and team spirit. Legendary players who have donned the red shirt include the prolific striker Alon Mizrahi, midfield maestro Yossi Benayoun (who started his career there), and iconic captain Yaniv Katan. The fan base, known as the "Reds," is fiercely loyal and creates an intense atmosphere, with their socialist roots often reflected in fan displays and chants. A defining feature of the club is its fierce crosstown rivalry with Maccabi Haifa, known as the "Haifa Derby." This is one of the most charged derbies in Israeli football, splitting the city's allegiances and producing unforgettable matches. Currently competing in the Israeli Premier League, Hapoel Haifa continues to be a competitive force, often challenging for European qualification spots while maintaining its identity as the people's club of Haifa. An interesting fact is that the club's original name was "Hapoel Haifa Football Club," and it has maintained its red color and emblematic hammer symbol throughout its century-long history.
