Founded in 1966 through the merger of several local clubs, Kocaelispor represents the industrial heart of Kocaeli province in Turkey. The club was established to unify the city's footballing passion and quickly became a symbol of local pride. Their home is the 33,000-capacity Kocaeli Stadium, located in the city of İzmit, a major industrial and cultural hub on the Sea of Marmara. Kocaelispor's golden era arrived in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They famously won the Turkish Cup twice, in 1997 and 2002, and achieved their highest league finish as runners-up in the 1999-2000 Süper Lig season. This success earned them a place in European competition, where they notably reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 2001-02, defeating teams like Borussia Dortmund and Maccabi Haifa in a memorable run. A major rivalry exists with Sakaryaspor, a neighboring province clash known as the "Marmara Derby."
