Founded in the aftermath of World War II in 1945, the club's history is intrinsically linked to the automotive giant Volkswagen. The city of Wolfsburg itself was built as a "Stadt des KdF-Wagens" (City of the Strength Through Joy Car) for Volkswagen factory workers, and the football club emerged from the company's sports association, initially playing as BSG Volkswagenwerk Stadt des KdF-Wagens before adopting its current name in 1945. The club's home is the state-of-the-art Volkswagen Arena, a 30,000-capacity stadium that opened in 2002, replacing the older VfL-Stadion.
