Palmeiras
Founded in 1914 by Italian immigrants in São Paulo, Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras is one of Brazil's most storied and successful football clubs. Originally named Palestra Itália, the club was forced to change its name during World War II due to anti-Italian sentiment, adopting the name Palmeiras in 1942. This history of resilience is woven into the club's identity. The Verdão (The Big Green) plays its home matches at the modern Allianz Parque in São Paulo, a state-of-the-art arena that replaced the old Palestra Itália stadium. The club's history is decorated with an incredible haul of silverware, including a record 12 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A titles and a record 4 Copa do Brasil trophies. On the continental stage, Palmeiras has cemented its legacy with three Copa Libertadores titles (1999, 2020, 2021), making it a dominant force in South American football. The club's identity is built on a passionate fan base known for their unwavering support and a playing style that often blends tactical discipline with attacking flair. Legendary players like Ademir da Guia, considered the greatest in club history, Marcos, the iconic goalkeeper, and modern stars like Dudu and Endrick have donned the famous green jersey. Palmeiras is also renowned as an "Academia de Futebol" (Football Academy), having developed countless talents for the Brazilian national team. Currently, Palmeiras remains a perennial contender at the top of the Campeonato Brasileiro, consistently challenging for titles under the guidance of coach Abel Ferreira. Their most intense rivalry is the "Choque-Rei" (King Clash) against São Paulo FC, but the derby against Corinthians, known as the "Derby Paulista," is one of the most heated in world football. An interesting fact is that the club's founding date, August 26, is celebrated as a holiday for its millions of fans, known as "Palmeirenses."
