Members FC, founded in 1898 in the industrial heart of Bridgeport, England, began as a works team for the local Millwrights’ Union. The club’s name reflects its original ethos: every player and supporter was a “member” of the community, and the club was entirely player-owned until the 1920s. Early matches were played on a patch of common land behind the Union Hall, with goals made from wooden pallets and rope. In 1905, the club moved to its current home, the John Wainwright Memorial Ground (often simply called “The Shed”), a compact 14,500-capacity stadium famous for its steep, uncovered terraces and the iconic red-brick main stand built by members’ volunteer labour in 1913. Bridgeport, a former coal and steel town in the West Riding of Yorkshire, provides the club’s gritty, blue-collar identity. Members FC has never been a giant of the English game, but its history is rich with overachievement. They won the old Third Division North twice (1935 and 1954), and their greatest moment came in 1968 when, as a Fourth Division side, they reached the FA Cup semi-finals, losing 2–1 to Everton after a replay. The run remains the furthest a club from the bottom tier has ever progressed in the competition. Domestically, they lifted the Football League Trophy in 1986 and 2002, and the FA Trophy (after the club transitioned to non-league in 1991) in 2008 and 2015. Legendary players include centre-half “Iron” Joe Hargreaves (captain of the 1968 cup run and later a manager), winger Tommy “Flash” Denning who scored 237 goals between 1956 and 1969, and modern favourite Leon Okoro, a midfield dynamo who helped the club win promotion back to the National League in 2022. The club’s playing style has traditionally been direct, physical, and high-energy—long balls, relentless pressing, and wing play—earning them the nickname “The Steamrollers”. In recent years under manager Dave Tonge, they have adopted a more fluid 4-3-3, but the core remains hard work and set-piece strength. Fan culture is fiercely independent. Supporters self-organise through the Members’ Trust, which owns a share of the club. Matches at The Shed are known for constant singing, rattles, and the “Bridgeport Derby” when they face neighbours Town FC—a rivalry dating back to 1909 and a disputed cup match that ended with a pitch invasion. The “Members Only” terrace section drums and chants throughout, and club songs include “We Are the Members” (to the tune of “Yellow Submarine”) and “Hargreaves’ Boys”. Currently, Members FC competes in the National League (the fifth tier of English football), having regained league status after financial struggles in the early 2000s. They are stable, mid-table, and aiming for a playoff push. A unique fact: the club has never been relegated from the top flight—because they have never reached it. Their motto, “E Pluribus Unum” (Out of many, one), appears on the crest, which features crossed pickaxes and a football.
