Peñarol
Founded in 1891 by workers of the Central Uruguay Railway, Club Atlético Peñarol is the oldest and most successful football club in Uruguay. Its name derives from a district in Montevideo, and its iconic yellow-and-black colors were inspired by the railway signals of its founders. Known as "Manyas" or "Carboneros" (the coalmen), the club is a foundational pillar of South American football. Peñarol's home is the modern Estadio Campeón del Siglo, inaugurated in 2016, though its spiritual home remains the legendary Estadio Centenario, built for the 1930 World Cup. The club's trophy cabinet is monumental, boasting a record 51 Uruguayan Primera División titles. Internationally, Peñarol is a giant, having won the Copa Libertadores five times (1960, 1961, 1966, 1982, 1987) and the Intercontinental Cup three times (1961, 1966, 1982), cementing its status as a world club champion. The club's identity is built on a tradition of attacking, passionate football and a fierce, never-say-die attitude. Its legendary players include Juan Alberto Schiaffino, considered one of the greatest playmakers ever, Fernando Morena, the all-time top scorer in Uruguayan football, and Diego Forlán, who began his career there. The fan culture is intensely loyal and widespread, with "Manyas" forming one of the largest fanbases in the country. Peñarol's eternal rivalry with Club Nacional de Football, known as the "Clásico del Fútbol Uruguayo," is one of the oldest and most heated derbies in world football. Currently, Peñarol remains a dominant force in the Uruguayan league, consistently challenging for the title and representing the nation in continental competitions. An interesting fact is that the club is officially recognized as the "Decano" (the Dean) of Uruguayan football, a testament to its unparalleled history and influence.
