Ried
Founded in 1912 in the Upper Austrian town of Ried im Innkreis, Sportverein Ried von 1912, commonly known as SV Ried or simply Ried, is a club deeply woven into the fabric of its community. The club's origins trace back to a group of local enthusiasts, and it has maintained a strong regional identity ever since. For decades, Ried competed in the lower tiers of Austrian football, embodying the spirit of a determined, provincial club. The team's home is the Josko Arena, a modern 7,680-seat stadium that replaced the old Fill Metallbau Stadion. This venue, located in the heart of Ried im Innkreis, provides an intimate and often raucous atmosphere, particularly during high-stakes matches. The city itself, known for its agricultural and industrial character, rallies behind its team, making matchdays a central event in local life. Ried's most glorious period came in the early 2000s. Under the guidance of manager Helmut Kraft, the club achieved its greatest successes, winning the Austrian Cup twice, in 1998 and 2011. These triumphs earned them qualification for the UEFA Cup (now Europa League), where they gained valuable European experience. They also consistently competed in the Austrian Bundesliga, establishing themselves as a respected top-flight side. Legendary figures from this era include captain and midfield general Thomas Kühbauer and prolific striker Herfried Glieder. The club's playing style has traditionally been characterized by organization, physical resilience, and a strong team ethic, reflecting the hard-working ethos of the region. The fan culture is passionate and loyal, with supporters known for their unwavering backing through both promotions and relegations. A notable rivalry exists with fellow Upper Austrian club LASK, creating fiercely contested regional derbies. Currently, SV Ried competes in the Austrian 2. Liga, the second tier of Austrian football, where they are consistently among the contenders for promotion back to the Bundesliga. An interesting fact is that the club was originally named "Sportvereinigung Ried" before adopting its current name. Furthermore, the Josko Arena's naming rights are held by a local window and door manufacturer, underscoring the club's deep ties to local industry. SV Ried remains a symbol of regional pride, a club with a history of punching above its weight and a community that lives and breathes football.
