Founded in 2005 as Shanghai Dongya, the club that would become Shanghai SIPG has undergone a remarkable transformation to establish itself as a powerhouse in Chinese football. The club was initially formed by former Chinese international Xu Genbao, who started the project with a youth academy, famously housing and training young players like Wu Lei in a modest dormitory. After years of progression through the lower leagues, the club was promoted to the Chinese Super League (CSL) in 2013. A pivotal moment came in 2015 when the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) took full ownership, injecting significant financial resources and rebranding the team, which ignited a new era of ambition and success. The team plays its home matches at the iconic Shanghai Stadium, a 56,000-capacity venue known as the "Eighty-Thousand-Person Stadium" due to its massive scale. Located in the vibrant Xuhui District, the stadium's atmosphere on match days is a testament to the club's growing stature. Shanghai SIPG's most notable achievement to date is winning the 2018 Chinese Super League title, breaking the dominance of Guangzhou Evergrande. They have also been consistent contenders in the AFC Champions League, reaching the semi-finals in 2017, and have claimed the Chinese FA Super Cup. The club's identity is built on an attacking, possession-based style of football, a philosophy that attracted global superstars. Brazilian internationals Hulk and Oscar, along with Austrian striker Marko Arnautović, formed a formidable foreign spine. However, the heart and soul of the club for many years was local hero Wu Lei, the academy graduate who became the CSL's all-time top scorer before moving to Europe. His legacy is deeply intertwined with the club's rise. Shanghai SIPG boasts a passionate and growing fan base, with supporters groups like the "Red Devil" creating a vibrant, red-themed atmosphere at the Shanghai Stadium. A fierce intra-city rivalry exists with Shanghai Shenhua, known as the "Shanghai Derby," one of the most intense and highly anticipated fixtures in Chinese football. Currently, Shanghai SIPG remains a top-tier contender in the CSL, consistently challenging for honors and representing the city on the continental stage, solidifying its status as a modern giant of the Chinese game.
