Internacional
Founded in 1909 by a group of young men from Porto Alegre, Sport Club Internacional was established with a revolutionary and inclusive ethos. Its name and red color were chosen to symbolize internationalism and a welcome to all, regardless of social class or origin, setting it apart from its early rivals. This founding principle cemented its identity as "The People's Club" (O Clube do Povo). Based in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Internacional's fortress is the iconic Estádio José Pinheiro Borda, universally known as the Beira-Rio. Inaugurated in 1969 and situated on the banks of the Guaíba River, it is one of Brazil's most modern stadiums, having hosted matches during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The club's trophy cabinet is filled with major honors, including three Brasileirão Série A titles (1975, 1976, 1979) and a record 45 Campeonato Gaúcho state championships. Internationally, their crowning achievement is winning the Copa Libertadores in 2006 and 2010, with the latter victory leading to a historic FIFA Club World Cup triumph over TP Mazembe. They also won the 2007 Recopa Sudamericana. The red side of Porto Alegre has been graced by legendary figures. Midfield maestro Falcão, a star of the 1982 World Cup, is considered one of the greatest players in club history. Other icons include the charismatic Argentine playmaker Andrés D'Alessandro, prolific striker Fernandão, and goalkeeper Taffarel. The team's playing style has historically been characterized by technical skill, tactical organization, and a never-say-die attitude, reflecting the resilience of its southern Brazilian roots. The fanbase, known as the Colorados, is fiercely passionate and loyal, creating a formidable atmosphere at the Beira-Rio. Their rivalry with neighbors Grêmio, known as the Grenal, is one of the most intense and historic derbies in world football, dividing the entire state. Currently competing in the Brasileirão Série A, Internacional consistently aims to challenge for national and continental honors, upholding its legacy as a giant of Brazilian and South American football. An interesting fact is that the club's founding date, April 4, is celebrated as a holiday in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
