Vitória

Founded in 1899 in the coastal city of Setúbal, Vitória Futebol Clube is one of Portugal's most historic and traditional clubs. Often distinguished as Vitória de Setúbal, the club was established by a group of young men from the city, quickly becoming a cornerstone of local identity. Their iconic green and white colors are a symbol of pride for the Setúbal community. The club plays its home matches at the Estádio do Bonfim, a stadium with a capacity of around 18,000 spectators. Known for its intimate and intimidating atmosphere, the Bonfim has been the stage for many of the club's greatest triumphs. Vitória's most glorious era came in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period that yielded their most significant silverware. They won the Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cup) three times, in 1964-65, 1966-67, and 2004-05, and were runners-up on several other occasions. They also claimed the Taça da Liga (League Cup) in 2007-08. In European competition, Vitória famously reached the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup semi-finals in 1968-69, a remarkable achievement for a provincial club. Vitória has been home to legendary Portuguese players, most notably the great striker José Torres and the iconic goalkeeper Manuel Bento, both of whom starred for the national team. The club is celebrated for its passionate and loyal fanbase, known as "Victorianos," who create a vibrant and unwavering support, particularly in the challenging times. Their fierce rivalry with local neighbours FC Barreirense is known as the "Setúbal Derby," a fixture that divides the city. Traditionally, Vitória has been known for playing attractive, attacking football, often developing talented youth players. In recent years, the club has faced significant financial difficulties and sporting challenges, leading to relegation from the top flight. As of the current season, Vitória competes in the Liga Portugal 2, the second tier of Portuguese football, where they continue to fight for a return to their former status among the elite.
